Retainers in Monterey Park & Beyond

Wearing a retainer after orthodontic treatment is essential for preserving your results and maintaining your beautiful, straight smile. Retainers keep your teeth in their new positions as the surrounding bone and tissue adjust, which prevents shifting over time. Consistent retainer use helps maintain proper alignment, reducing the risk of crowding or relapse, which could require additional treatment.

Investing in regular retainer wear not only protects your smile but also preserves the benefits of your orthodontic treatment, ensuring a lifetime of improved oral health, confidence, and functionality.

How to clean your retainers

You should be cleaning your retainer at least twice a day when you are wearing them full time or once daily (in the morning) when you are instructed to wear them at night time only. Check out the video on this page for in-depth instructions on how to clean your retainers and what products to use. Be sure to never boil or use hot water on your retainers as this can permanently distort them requiring you to get new retainers, or worse, having your teeth shift!

Signs you may need a new retainers

Over time, retainers can show signs of wear that indicate it may be time for a replacement. If you notice cracks, warping, or any changes in fit, these can all suggest that your retainer isnโ€™t providing the necessary support to keep your teeth in alignment. Discoloration, unpleasant odors, or buildup that doesnโ€™t come off with regular cleaning may also signal that itโ€™s time for a new one. Additionally, if your teeth feel like theyโ€™re shifting or your retainer becomes uncomfortable, contact Dr. Greg ASAP to assess whether a replacement retainer is needed to protect your smile.

How often should you wear your retainer?

In the first 3 months after braces or aligners are removed, itโ€™s essential to wear your retainer full-time (day and night), as your teeth are most likely to shift during this period. After this initial phase, most often Dr. Greg will recommend transitioning to nighttime-only wear

Wearing the retainer nightly will ensure that your teeth and bite remain in the most healthy and stable relationship and maintain that beautiful smile of yours!

What Type of Retainer Is Right for You?

Not all retainers are the same, and having the correct one makes a big difference in keeping your best smile. Your teeth naturally tend to shift back to their original position after orthodontic treatment. The correct retainer prevents that and keeps things in place where they ought to be.

There are a number of major types of retainers, each with its own benefits:

  • Clear plastic retainers โ€“ These are tight-fitting and transparent, so a suitable choice if you want something low-profile and discreet. They are simple to wear and comfortable, but may need to be replaced often with frequent use.

  • Hawley retainers โ€“ These are metal wire and acrylic, and very durable, and also adjustable in the long run. They are more visible but offer long-term reliability.

  • Fixed (bonded) retainers โ€“ These are cemented behind your teeth and remain there 24/7. They're great if you're afraid of not remembering to wear your retainer, but they also take some meticulous brushing and flossing.

Dr. Greg will help you make the ideal choice based on your smile, lifestyle, and habits. Whatever kind you wear, retainers keep your teeth alignedโ€”and your smile stunning for a lifetime.
